Vagabond
Vagabond
Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, the story begins in the aftermath of the Battle of Sekigahara (1600). A young, bloodthirsty man named Shinmen Takezo survives the slaughter and returns to his village, only to be hunted as a fugitive. Through the intervention of a Zen monk, he is renamed Musashi Miyamoto and sets out on a "shugyo" (warrior's pilgrimage) to become "Invincible Under the Heavens."
The series is not a typical battle manga. While the duels (including the legendary 1-vs-70 Yoshioka battle) are breathtaking, the core of the story is Musashi's spiritual evolution. It explores the hollow nature of violence, the search for "the Way," and the realization that being "invincible" is merely a word. Musashi's journey from a "wild beast" to a philosopher-swordsman is mirrored by the journey of his rival, Sasaki Kojiro, whose backstory is told through a massive, silent, and beautifully illustrated arc.
